Whirlpool is supporting a proposed energy standard for refrigerators that was developed by a coalition of public utilities, manufacturers and environmental groups that worked two years on the issue. The standard will reduce energy usage by 20% and add about $60 to every refrigerator. The Department of Energy revoked its proposed standard to adopt the one the coalition created. However, the Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers and refrigerator manufacturers have backed away from supporting the very standard they helped create. Whirlpool officials have accused them of playing politics.
