ENGLEWOOD CLIFFS, N.J. - LG Electronics' decision to deep-six its Goldstar 3DO interactive multi-player has come as no particular surprise to anyone in the industry.

The fact is that neither the single Goldstar system nor Matsushita's various Panasonic-3DO machines have sold particularly well since their inception, with only a few hundred thousand units moved worldwide in a little over three years, according to LG executives as well as industry insiders.

James Ireton, LGE's multimedia division vice president, said several times in recent months that it was becoming increasingly difficult to make any money on the Goldstar unit particularly in the face of new competitors like the Sony PlayStation and Sega Saturn.
