REDMOND, Wash.--Nintendo of America reduced the price of its Virtual Boy, 32-bit portable 3-D video game system, from $159 to $99 last week.

George Harrison, marketing vice president, said the price reduction is intended to draw a larger segment of the consumer audience. "Getting the price down to under $100 should get us to a wider audience and into the true mass market," he said.

As the only 32-bit portable 3-D video game system in the industry, Virtual Boy has presented some unique marketing challenges because of the unusual nature of the product. There are relatively few 3-D software titles available on the market today.

Nintendo currently has eight titles for the Virtual Boy system, with plans to release two more titles this summer.
