Qualcomm Personal Electronics has received two contracts totaling $850 million to supply phones for personal communications services (PCS) for the first nationwide PCS networks in the US. A joint venture of Qualcomm Inc. and Sony Electronics Inc., Qualcomm Personal will begin delivering the PCS handsets to Sprint Spectrum L.P. in July 1996 and to PrimeCo Personal Communications L.P. in late 1996. The handsets, which use lithium ion batteries, will offer voice communication, voice mail, messaging capability and other features.
