ENGLEWOOD, Colo.--EchoStar Communications Corp. reported the FCC has granted final approval to EchoStar to merge privately held Direct Broadcast Satellite Corp. with an EchoStar subsidiary.
The companies reported their agreement to merge on Dec. 22, 1996.
"We are very pleased with the FCC's decision. It allows utilization of valuable DBS spectrum, helping to make direct broadcast satellite a viable alternative to cable. This approval allows us to use 11 transponders at 61.5 degrees west longitude to better serve consumers in the eastern and central United States," said Charlie Ergen, chairman and chief executive officer of EchoStar Communications.
