Staples Inc. is considering acquiring office supply store rival Office Depot Inc. for $3.4 bil. The resulting company would be called Staples the Office Depot and would generate estimated annual retail revenues of $7.5 bil. The merger would expand the market for computers and other high-end products, according to manufacturers. Staples and Office Depot would likely close 50 to 70 units if the merger is approved.
