DALTON, Ga. -- The Shaw rug division will open a small prototype rug-specialty store in the Phoenix area in 1997, according to Don Whitfield, vice president of the division. The shop will be located in a heavily trafficked outlet mall, Whitfield said.

"The store is a test to determine whether this type of retail environment is conducive to selling rugs," Whitfield said, emphasizing that the store is not connected to any other Shaw retail floor-covering endeavor.

Shaw Industries, the $3 billion parent company, is a major producer of broadloom carpet. A year ago, the company made an aggressive entry into the retail floor-covering business by opening stores and existing retail and contract chains.
