FRAMINGHAM, Mass.--This year, major U.S, PC manufacturers will open "factory outlets" on the Internet, in an effort to establish a distribution channel that offers higher margins.

The move by manufacturers is one of many Internet-related trends that are likely to influence the information technology market in 1997, according to forecases tin a report by global market researcher International Data Corp., based here.

IDC is predicting that Compaq Computer Corp. and IBM will develop Web sites that will serve as online outlets for selling computer hardware.
