RESTON, Va. -- Retail software sales in December were lackluster in every category except for games, said market research firm PC Data, based here.

Total retail software sales during the month reached $746.2 million, a 9.6 percent gain over the $680.9 million in December 1995. Unit sales in December increased 14.4 percent over last year's, to 19.2 million from 16.8 million.

Games had the highest gains for the month, according to PC Data research. Dollar sales in the category increased 23 percent in December over the same month in 1995, while unit sales rose 28.3 percent. The average retail price per game during December was $32.12, compared with $33.52 in December 1995.
