Home furnishings store chain Pier 1 is expected to achieve a 12% to 14% growth in sales each year over the next few years and expects sales to climb to almost $1.5 billion in 2000. Sales are expected to jump 13.4% from 1996 to more than $1 billion in 1997. The chain's success may be a result of marketing to the under-40 consumer, which represents about half of its customers.
In the not so retail-friendly '90s, retailers from the most obscure niche stores to the largest department store chains have seen limited opportunities coming their way.
