Sharp Electronics thinks it has something truly new in a microwave oven -- a half-megabyte of memory for a computer screen that displays recipes, serving ideas and even a reminder to walk the dog.
Perhaps the biggest news is street prices probably will be less than $200.
Sharp, the market share leader in the category, has long urged consumers to use ovens for creative cooking. "The question was, 'What can we do to get the consumer to use the microwave oven more?' " said John Kelly, vice president of Sharp's Home Appliance division.
The answer is a computer menu system from which users pick options and scroll through more than 2,200 screens. It's called the Multiple Choice series.
