In an effort to make the PC a more essential home appliance, Compaq Computer last week unveiled a fall computer lineup with consumer electronics features.

Among the consumer electronics elements of forthcoming Presario desktops are: backlit Easy Access buttons to launch applications or log on to the Internet; RCA jacks that connect a camcorder, VCR, TV or stereo speakers to selected desktops; and a home theater feature with Dolby Digital SurroundSound quality audio on two-speakers and MPEG-2 video playback on minitowers.

Compaq's 4800 series, for example, comes with the Compaq Creativity Imaging Center, or RCA jacks that allow users to capture still images and video from a camcorder or VCR. Compaq also showed a DVD-ROM model, the Presario 4824, a 266MHz...
