Perhaps there is a future at retail for energy-efficient refrigeration.

Contrary to the conventional thinking that consumers don't consider energy savings when they shop -- or perhaps in spite of it -- some developments could influence the public's preferences. According to the people who run the Energy Star program, they are about to sign up their first large buying group and leading manufacturer.

Energy Star was created by the Department of Energy and the Environmental Protection Agency to sell models that use at least 20 percent less energy than present standards require (HFN, May 12, page 61). Montgomery Ward and Circuit City are among retailers that have trained salespeople and provided consumers with literature about the benefits.
