NCR Corp., Dayton, Ohio, will incorporate the Solaris Unix operating system from Sun Microsystems, Mountain View, Cal., into its next generation of servers, enabling retailers to build bigger and more powerful data warehouses and take advantage of Java-based Web development tools.
"Our current data warehousing community has over 850 installations today requiring availability, reliability and serviceability that exceeds most systems in operation today," said Bill Eisenman, senior vice president of NCR's Computer Systems Group.
He noted that Wal-Mart is NCR's largest data warehousing customer, with 786 servers, 3,840 disk drives and 96 channel attachments connected to the mainframe.
