Atlanta-The Cellular Telecommunications Industry Association filed a petition with the Federal Communication Commission last week, asking the agency to move forward with the "Calling Party Pays" rule.
The system, in which the cell phone caller, not the call's recipient, pays the bill is used virtually worldwide, except in the United States.
Under the plan, carriers would have to notify the callers that they'll be paying for the call.
The CTIA asked the FCC to adopt a national standard instead of an individual state standard that could have states in conflict with one another.
A few companies do provide some form of the calling-party-pays plan.
