NEW YORK--Big M, a privately held apparel and accessories retailer based in Totowa, N.J., expects to save $500,000 in payroll costs this year, thanks to a new payroll planning system it developed with a technology vendor.

"How technology can save real dollars is the question everybody asks and we think we'll probably save a half a million dollars in payroll," said Frank Zarrello, director of planning and allocation. The same principles used in merchandise planning -- tracking sales trends in great detail -- are just as appropriate when scheduling staff in stores, he added.
