AS DIGITAL TV'S DEBUT NEARS, INDUSTRY CHARTS COURSE

NEW YORK-As the dream of digital television rapidly becomes reality, consumer electronics retailers detailed strategies -- and concerns -- at a conference last week. At the Digital Television Conference, here, sponsored by U.S. equity research firm Warburg Dillon Read, officials from Best Buy, Circuit City and RadioShack were on a panel that also included Matsushita and Mitsubishi.

Philip Schoonover, senior vice president of marketing of consumer electronics for Best Buy, said he was encouraged by a demonstration of HDTV earlier this year at one of Best Buy's stores.
