NEW YORK- Bit by bit, Maytag Appliances unfolds its plans for futuristic cooking appliances. Building on the TurboChef alliance, the Blodgett acquisition, the Jenn-Air history of innovation and the Maytag thrust to become identified as a cooking brand, there are periodic hints about where all this is leading.

A chunk was revealed here late last month. Not surprisingly, it will be a super-fast oven, a product of the TurboChef collaboration, a Jenn-Air unit, and available sometime next year at a premium price.

The so-called rapid-cook technology works by forcing heated air in and out at the same rate, explained Susan Fisher, new-products manager.

Its effect is for consumers "to cook faster than ever before without sacrificing" food qualities....
