NEW YORK-Tiffany's baby blue box, perhaps the most instantly recognizable symbol of luxury and status, will no longer appear in stores like Bloomingdale's and George Watts & Son. Tiffany & Co. has decided to discontinue sales to department stores and domestic independent jewelers beginning January 1, 2000.

"U.S. trade distribution, which began 14 years ago, represents less than three percent of Tiffany's total sales and has only been marginally profitable," James Quinn, vice chairman, said in a statement. "This decision also reflects our strategy to maximize control over the distribution of our products and our brand, as well as our focus on company-operated store development."
