DEERFIELD, Ill.-While many drugstore chains treat home solutions as an afterthought, Walgreens Co. had made it a major department in its 2,850 stores across the country. Merchandised throughout its retail shelves in prominent ways, both personal-care and home-comfort items are an important part of the product mix strategy.
"Overall, it is a solid category with steady sales," said Chris Serbin, buyer for most of Walgreens' home solutions products.
Total Walgreen sales hit $15.3 billion in fiscal 1998. According to the chain's annual report, 25 percent of that total was rung up in general merchandise. Estimates are that at least 8 percent of that was produced by home solutions.
