NEW YORK-Retailers of home furnishings may be increasing their presence on the Internet, but they still lag well behind retailers in other product categories in generating online sales.

According to PC Data Online, an Internet usage tracking firm, only five home furnishers -- all of whom were among HFN's top 200 home retailers -- showed up on the top 40 Web sites, which were ranked by number of buyers in January 2000. Rankings were developed using a sample of over 100,000 home Internet users.

Leading the five was egghead.com, which sells consumer electronics and is a favorite online site among younger e-tail shoppers. The firm recently merged with onsale.com, another electronics store, so egghead's score reflects a combination of what had previously...
