NEW YORK-Ethan Allen, long known as one of the preeminent mid- to high-end furniture brands in the industry, has its eye on the lower end of the market.

Chairman and president M. Farooq Kathwari told investors at the Banc of America Securities Consumer Conference last week that the company is examining ways to manufacture a more competitively priced line of furniture.

Typically, Ethan Allen reaches mid- to high-income consumers who are 35 to 60 years of age.

"We're doing research to see how we can expand that," said Kathwari. "We're looking at either an Ethan Allen brand or a second brand."
