HOFFMAN ESTATES, Ill.-Strong home furnishing sales helped Sears, Roebuck and Co., the second-largest U.S. retailer, report some good news. The retailer last week announced that it expects its first quarter sales to far outstrip Wall Street forecasts, and its March domestic same-store sales will grow by 3.8 percent.

The department store chain also said that total domestic store revenues increased 5.4 percent to $2.66 billion in the five-week period, compared with $2.52 billion in the same month last year.

"Our monthly results were driven by continued momentum in home appliances combined with strong sales performance in home improvement, including lawn and garden," Arthur Martinez, chairman and chief executive officer, said in a statement.
