Don't you love what Gene Kahn did? I can't believe I'm saying this, but you really have to take your hat off to May Co. for its purchase 10 days ago of David's Bridal, the big bridal superstore operation.

It was such an un-May Co. thing to do, too.

Say what you want about May Co. Say it's a group of largely unimaginative merchants who aren't especially innovative or daring in their product selections or presentations. They are clearly behind the pack -- not to mention arch-rival Federated -- when it comes to merchandising pizzazz.

But in the same breath, say they are brilliant businesspeople who have turned retailing into a science, driven by productivity and profit margins. And Federated's leaders will be the first to tell you they...
