As he signed off from the Democratic National Convention in Los Angeles, CBS News anchor Dan Rather sniped that the event was "a flagrant act of hyperbole. Popeil politics, as in Ron Popeil, the king of the infomercial."

While Rather's comment might have slighted a lesser man, Popeil was thrilled. In the tradition of P.T. Barnum, Popeil was delighted Rather got the facts right: He is the infomercial king.

Long before George Foreman squeezed the fat out of a hamburger, Popeil had sliced and diced his way into retailing history.
