As he signed off from the Democratic National Convention in Los Angeles, CBS News anchor Dan Rather sniped that the event was "a flagrant act of hyperbole. Popeil politics, as in Ron Popeil, the king of the infomercial."
While Rather's comment might have slighted a lesser man, Popeil was thrilled. In the tradition of P.T. Barnum, Popeil was delighted Rather got the facts right: He is the infomercial king.
Long before George Foreman squeezed the fat out of a hamburger, Popeil had sliced and diced his way into retailing history. And despite an occasional snide comment, the millions of dollars Popeil has earned pitching inventions over the years opened the doors to a brave new world of retailing: television.
