November Shipments Increase 6 Percent
Manufacturers' shipments of residential furniture in November 2000 rose 6 percent over November 1999, an increase attributable in part to a decline in backlogs, according to the monthly survey by BDO Seidman. Year-to-date 2000 shipments were up 7 percent over 1999.
November backlogs were down 13 percent from November 1999 and down 3 percent from October. New orders declined for the third straight month, falling 4 percent to $2.204 billion. November inventory levels were down 1 percent from October 2000 levels, but remained an "alarming" 19 percent above last year's levels.
