NEW YORK-Macy's has Calvin Klein, Filene's has Susan Sargent.

That's just one point of contrast between Macy's and Filene's August home sale catalogs, which underscore distinct differences in the retailers' textiles offerings and promotional strategies.

Although Macy's, a division of Federated Department Stores, and Filene's, a May Co. division, both grant the category about one-third of their home catalogs, the former places a greater emphasis on private labels with a slightly more upscale mix, while the latter skews toward national brands and more moderate assortments.
