TENT SALES MAY BE OVERDONE, BUT THEY'RE STILL A GOOD PITCH.

NEW YORK-Although furniture and rug retailers continue to rely on tent sales, they are also looking for new and better ways to drive business.

Retailers agree that tent sales are overdone, and some cite other flaws, such as their susceptibility to bad weather and a negative impact on brand image. On the other hand, these sales can potentially double weekend business, and that keeps the tents pitched.

Tent sales are so overdone that even used-car dealers are having them now, said Jack Reynolds, machine-made rug buyer for Einstein Moomjy, a rug and furniture retailer based in Paramus, N.J., that held a tent sale in late September.
