NEW YORK-An increase in raw material costs is raising petroleum-derived fiber and carpet prices.

DuPont, Solutia, Mohawk and Beaulieu will all be raising fiber and carpet prices this month or April. The increase will offset the sharp rise in petroleum prices, resulting from a looming war with Iraq, a general labor strike in Venezuela that curbed petroleum production and a colder-than-usual winter.

DuPont recently announced price increases of 2 to 11 percent on residential nylon fibers, which will go into effect this month. Aside from escalating raw material costs, other key factors cited by DuPont were compensation and benefit increases, including health care-related costs.
