WESTBURY, N.Y.-The ongoing duel between archrivals Home Depot and Lowe's has intensified in the lighting business, where the two home center giants share more than one-third of the $4.8 billion industry.

The battling retailers approach the lighting category differently. And their varying approaches reflect their differences in overall strategy.

Home Depot's strength is in the contractor market, which it said accounts for 30 percent of its total sales. But its hard-core business is being supplemented with a newfound focus on fashion at value prices in ceiling fans, light fixtures (which are now displayed in style "families") and private-label lamps.
