NEW YORK-Going to a spa is a luxury that only a privileged fraction of the population can enjoy, but spa towels are a different story.

The spa towel has permeated the market to such an extent that some version of it can be found at almost every level of the retail chain, from high-end stores like ABC Carpet & Home to mass merchants such as Wal-Mart and Target. And several suppliers, including Abyss, Terrisol, J.R. United and Santens, have developed their own spa lines that all vary in construction size and color.

With so many spa towels on the market, it makes one wonder, "What is a spa towel?"

"That was the question of the week at the [New York textiles] market," said Steven Drew, director of design for Abyss, a high-end luxury supplier....
