CALIFORNIA TORCHIERE STANDARDS CATCH THE INDUSTRY BY SURPRISE.

SACRAMENTO, Calif.-Just when the lighting industry believed it had survived the torchiere debacle, the state of California implemented new energy standards that restrict their wattage.

Buried deep in the California Energy Commission's new standards on major appliances is a single-sentence rule on the popular, uplight floor lamps known as torchieres.

California Appliance Efficiency Regulation 1605.3 (n), reads:

"Energy Efficiency Standard and Energy Design Standard for Torchieres. Torchieres manufactured on or after March 1, 2003, shall not consume more than 190 watts and shall not be capable of operating with lamps that total more than 190 watts."

The rule, adopted by the commission in 2001, went into effect in March 2003. ...
