NEW YORK-Improved weather conditions across the country in July sent shoppers scurrying for bargains as retailers cleared shelves to get ready for the back-to-school season. As a result, retailers reported more robust monthly same-store sales.

In turn, the HFN Comp-Sales Average rose 3.4 percent for July, which is well above June's 1 percent increase.

Of the 28 retailers tracked by HFN, six posted declines in comparable-store sales. Dillard's, Federated and Pier 1 Imports had declines of 1.0, 0.4 and 4.1 percent, respectively, while Sears, ShopKo and Stein Mart watched their same-store sales fall 0.8, 2.1 and 6.2 percent, respectively.
