NEW YORK-Home furnishings brought holiday cheer to some of the nation's biggest retailers over the "Black Friday" weekend, the much-anticipated kickoff to the biggest shopping season of the year. Merchants such as Wal-Mart, J.C. Penney and Crate & Barrel said home products -- ranging from consumer electronics to stainless-steel kitchen electrics and vibrantly colored home decor -- are heating up business this holiday season, with private-label programs helping to fuel sales.
J.C. Penney exceeded its plan for home sales over the Thanksgiving Day weekend, generating "high double-digit growth versus last year," Charles Chinni, executive vice president of home, shoes and jewelry, told HFN.
