NEW YORK-Wal-Mart does it. J.C. Penney does it. Now Federated is getting into the act.

Centralized buying, that is.

Federated Department Stores' move to consolidate its home buying functions under the new Macy's Home Store umbrella has shined a spotlight on the advantages of centralized buying over regional buying, such as greater purchasing power, speed to market with product assortments and vendor pull.

The move will result in the elimination of separate merchandising operations at all Federated divisions except Bloomingdale's.

In theory, if Wal-Mart can buy centrally for 3,016 stores, Federated should be able to pull it off with 422 units.
