SEARS CONVERTS 35 MORE UNITS TO APPLIANCE-HARDWARE STORES.(Brief Article)

HOFFMAN ESTATES, Ill.- Sears continues to tinker with its retail format by adding appliances to its hardware stores. Success in a pilot program encouraged the chain to convert another 35 Sears Hardware Stores into Sears Appliance and Hardware outlets. "We plan to add appliances to most of our remaining 103 hardware stores by year's end," said Beryl Buley, senior vice president and general manager of home stores.
Revamped stores are arranged into four core businesses: appliances, lawn and garden, paint and tools. Assortments in lower-demand categories -- including cabinet and bath hardware, ceiling fans, lighting, rough electrical and plumbing supplies -- are being reduced to accommodate appliances.
