ATLANTA-Haverty Furniture Cos. Inc. lifted total sales for the first quarter ended March 31 to $190.3 million, an 8.5 percent jump from $175.4 million for the corresponding quarter last year.
The full-service home furnishings retailer, which also experienced a same-store sales increase of 4 percent for the quarter, attributes the rise to competitive pricing and the company's proprietary "product-centric" merchandising strategy. Haverty is optimistic that the recently improving economic climate and the strong housing market will fuel consumer demand to renew home furnishings, according to Clarence H. Smith, president and chief executive officer of Haverty.
