HOME IMPROVEMENT REMODELS THE BUSINESS; DESPITE A MARKET SHARE DROP, SEARS STILL OUTSELLS THE NEXT SIX CHAINS COMBINED.

HFN: The Weekly Newspaper for the Home Furnishing Network, June, 2004

Byline: Gerry Beatty

It's all a matter of perspective.

Sears Roebuck and Co. sells more than one of every three major appliances at retail stores in the United States. The chain still generates more dollars than the next six leaders combined.

Sears' market share has dropped by five points in the past two years. That equals nearly $1 billion on the top line.

There was virtually no change in the rankings of the leading chains in 2003, but there were still tons of volatility in the business.

According to HFN's calculations, Sears didn't actually suffer sales declines. But the top 10 averaged increases of 10.8 percent from 2002, while Sears registered the smallest improvement, at 1.9 percent.

Clearly home...
