MEBANE, N.C.-Targeting new growth in Virginia, West Virginia and Kentucky, Mulberry, Fla.-based W.S. Badcock opened a $10 million distribution center here last week as part of a strategic plan to add 170 stores over the next six years.
Don Marks, chief executive officer, said the region represents a rich opportunity for the 330-store company due to the closure of Heilig-Meyers stores in the region four years ago. Like Heilig-Meyers, Badcock targets smaller towns and largely caters to customers who use store credit to make purchases. "Heilig-Meyers did about $200 million in eastern North Carolina [each year], and so far there hasn't been a major [retailer] to come in and pick up that business in those towns," he said, adding that...
