NEW YORK-The merger of Federated Department Stores and May Department Stores Co. will create a retailer with $4.4 billion in home furnishings sales. But what will it take to "Feder-alize" May's home business, its worst-performing division of late?

Home furnishings at May is defined by a tightly structured vendor mix and more moderate, cookie-cutter assortments than Federated, which will acquire the chain in the third quarter.

Federated is known for a more upscale, trend-directed, edgy home mix than May, with a huge emphasis on private-label merchandise.

But Federated's home business, which is also lagging behind the company's performance, is still a work in progress.
