NEW YORK-The mega-mass merchants strengthened their market-share dominance in the home furnishings industry last year. Target unseated Sears as the third-largest retailer and Wal-Mart, the number-one home merchant, ramped up category growth.

A cross-section of specialty chains -- from Bed Bath & Beyond to Lowe's, Best Buy and IKEA -- racked up robust gains on HFN's annual Top 150 Home Retailers list.

The list also shined a spotlight on home retailing's trouble spots: Furniture chains, as well as Sears and Kmart, posted among the steepest declines in home sales.
