ATLANTA-The July Atlanta International Area Rug Market heralded a first for the Oriental Rug Importers Association. In collaboration with AmericasMart Atlanta, the industry organization called upon its members to donate rugs for a silent auction to benefit its Charitable Fund and raised about $17,000 in the process.

"I had a commitment of 22 rugs in two days," said Lucille Laufer, executive director of ORIA. "It's a wonderful tribute to what this industry is about. They donated not to get glory, but to make a donation," she added. "That's why there are no company names [on the product up for auction]. I knew my members wouldn't let me down."

Opening bids were marked at 40 percent below importers' wholesale value. And...
