Recent moves to strike a balance between online consumer privacy and the benefits of one-to-one marketing have both sides eyeing the debate.

AmericanGreetings.com got married last September and is honeymooning in the land of one-to-one Internet marketing. The online arm of Cleveland's $2.5 billion American Greetings bought eAgents.com. The Fairfax, Va.-based email newspaper service delivers personalized content from more than 50 media sites to several hundred thousand subscribers.

eAgents.com benefits from the hardware and bandwidth resources of the Internet's second-leading greeting-card site. And AmericanGreetings.com gets a list. A big list, A growing list. A legitimate list of users who have supplied a little bit about themselves.
