Tim Timken ushered his family's bearings and steel maker from old-school management into manufacturing's modern era.
W .R. "Tim" Timken rises from a small conference table at the front of his third-floor office, which overlooks The Timken Co.'s industrial campus. The chairman retrieves from his modest desk a roller bearing and brings it to the table, working the shiny steel product through his fingers. It's made of nickel, aluminum, chromium and other alloys that he terms "almost perfect" in quality.
