Tim Timken ushered his family's bearings and steel maker from old-school management into manufacturing's modern era.

W .R. "Tim" Timken rises from a small conference table at the front of his third-floor office, which overlooks The Timken Co.'s industrial campus. The chairman retrieves from his modest desk a roller bearing and brings it to the table, working the shiny steel product through his fingers.
