An environmentalist before the term was popular, John Davey dedicated his life to tree and plant care.

John Davey was blessed with the ability to make anything grow -- a gift he nurtured into a flourishing business.

Born into poverty, Davey possessed exceptional intelligence, an acute sensitivity and the grit to overcome. Using a dictionary and the Bible, he taught himself to read. Davey embraced his father's example to "do it right or not at all" and became apprenticed in greenhouse management, horticulture and floriculture.

But by 1873, the 27-year-old needed more. That year, he sailed from his home in Somersetshire, England, to New York and then Warren, Ohio, to pursue his passion for tree and plant care....
