Hispanics Top Cirrhosis Deaths.

Liver cirrhosis mortality was higher in white Hispanic men and women than in African American and white non-Hispanic people in 1997, the first year in which all U.S. death certificates included a designation box for Hispanic origin, said Frederick S. Stinson, Ph.D., and his associates at the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, Bethesda, Md.

The findings run counter to the prevailing belief--based on cirrhosis death rates seen in the 1970s--that the population with the highest risk for cirrhosis death is African American men.
