PIN-UP NURSES? The Nebraska Hospital Association (NHA) recently released a 2005 calendar featuring 12 male nurses from hospitals across the state. NHA said it created the calendar to promote the opportunities the nursing field offers both women and men and to raise funds for nursing scholarships. Only about 4.2 percent of the 26,000 registered nurses (RNs) and licensed practical nurses (LPNs) in Nebraska are men, and the state has more than 850 openings for RNs and LPNs, according to state statistics.

The nurses featured in the calendar were selected from more than 65 applicants, who were asked to describe why they chose a nursing career and what they found rewarding about it. Common themes in their comments were the challenge, technical skills and personal...
