Chili powder saga highlights food traceability challenges.(REGULATORY COMPLIANCE)

Just weeks after Europe's new food traceability legislation became effective January 1, British food manufacturers endured something of a baptism of fire. Regulation (EC) No. 178/2002--which requires companies to produce, on demand, information about the sources and destinations of the ingredients and foodstuffs they sell--was invoked to track what happened to a batch of chili powder.

The drama started on February 7 when Britain's Food Standards Agency was notified that a certain product made with Wocester sauce--which contains chili powder--was exported to Italy by Premier Foods, and tested positive for Sudan-1, a dye now linked to cancer.
