The lion's share of RFID discussion is focused on the consumer packaged goods (CPG) sector, but it could be said the pharmaceutical industry has the most compelling RFID business case--the safety and security of the pharmaceutical supply chain--with manufacturers at the head of the supply chain pushing adoption, rather than retailers at the tail working to "wag the dog." As with CPG, however, looming mandate deadlines--this time from the Food & Drug Administration (FDA) and relevant state rather than Wal-Mart--are the incentives for pressing on.
