Electronic commerce comes to the checkout counter.(SCAN-BASED TRADING)

If you are supplying to a big-box retailer, add this phrase to your vocabulary: scan-based trading, or SBT. According to a survey of 15-plus major retailers--including Target, Meijer, and AutoZone--conducted by researchers at New York-based Kurt Salmon Associates, 20 percent to 30 percent of their inventory will be on SBT by the end of the year. Some of the retailers surveyed say as much as 40 percent of sales are SBT-based.

SBT is a simple concept: the supplier maintains ownership of inventory in the retailer's warehouse or store until the moment the product is scanned at the checkout counter.

Sounds like yet another high-tech scheme to enable retailers to beat up on suppliers.
